Life skills

Training the total athlete

At the Ice Jets Hockey Association, we want our kids to be complete players and complete people. Our coaches take the role of mentor and role model very seriously with our players. We believe in order for players to reach their full potential as athletes they must work daily at their own individual personal development. This allows them to be the best they can with all that they have been given. It is about reaching for - and realizing - their full potential through development of life skills.

The five components of our life skills program include:

  1. Academic excellence to support the academic programs of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
  2. Athletic excellence to build and develop solid foundations of skill in hockey.
  3. Career development to encourage players to develop and pursue career and life goals.
  4. Personal development to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for players, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.
  5. Community service to engage the player in service to surrounding communities.

The Ice Jets Hockey Association staff is further committed to:

  • providing an environment that promotes the development of values clarification, goal setting and responsible decision-making;
  • providing an environment of proactive programming rather than reactive intervention; and,
  • continuously evaluating and supporting our players.

At the Ice Jets Hockey Association we research the latest sports methodology, psychology and skill training proven to enhance performance combined with core values of meaning, attitude, enthusiasm, and excellence. We train athletes on what it takes to have greater confidence, self discipline, mental toughness, positive attitude, team leadership, and balance.

  • Intensity and mental toughness are two important components to great athletics. We design our programs to create a love for hard work, and celebrate the victory of accomplishment.
  • Leadership is another key teaching emphasis with training on how to be a leader on your team, how to make your team better, and how to be a leader of character, service and integrity.

More than ever before, we need our players to be people who can rise above the circumstances to achieve their dreams, to have a personal faith that changes the world for good, and achieve the mindset of a winner on and off the ice.
