Three generations of hockey

Coach Fred Seal’s renewed interest in coaching was brought on by his grandson Evan, 6, whose passion for hockey carries on the family tradition. Fred's son Derek (back left) is also an Ice Jets coach.

Fred enjoys teaching the fundamentals to new players - skating, stick handling and passing.

He has helped with the mini mite program and house league at Polar Ice Grapevine and looks forward to coaching with the Ice Jets and success at the Mite level this season.

Fred Seal arrived in Texas in 1991 from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Fred’s career spans 30 years as a player, coach, and instructor.

As a player, Fred played youth hockey from squirt to juniors playing in Toronto and surrounding Southern Ontario. He played on several teams that won championships in the BRHL and THL.

Fred skated on the Intermediate A Championship team in the MTHL that went 59-4-2. He went on to play in Northern Ontario Senior Hockey League before returning to Unionville, Ontario.

Fred coached in Leaside, Ontario with Dr. Tom Pashby, who helped initiate mandatory helmets and eventually face shields for all players up to Juniors in Canada. He was the Assistant Coach of the Unionville Jets AA Squirt team for two years before moving to Dallas.

Fred was involved in the early days of travel hockey in the Dallas. He helped sponsor hockey teams and was part of fund raising efforts to help offset those expenses. He returned to coaching in 1991, and for four years coached Pee Wee and Bantam teams, including TAHA championships in three years.

Fred says his greatest accomplishment from those early years was, “7 players who went on to play in the EJHL or USHL, 6 players who went on to play College Div I or III, and 2 players who went on to play professional hockey in the ECHL, CHL and IHL. One player was invited to the Dallas Stars Prospect Camp, first ever Dallas minor hockey player invited.”

Fred currently resides in Flower Mound with his wife Penny. He has three grown children, Liane, Corrie and Derek and two grandchildren, Evan and Brooklyn.

Fred is President / Owner of EVANbrooke Group, LLC (a Steel Brokerage Company) and Skye Island Consulting Firm.
